Diethanolamine is a secondary amine and a diol with molecular formula C₄H₁₁NO_2. At room temperature diethanolamine is a white solid, but as its hygroscopic it’s often encountered as a colorless, viscous liquid.

Production

Diethanolamine is produced by reacting ethylene oxide with aqueous ammonia.

This reaction produce diethanolamine as well as monoethanolamine and triethanolamine.

The ratio of each product can be controlled by the ratio of the reactants. 

Uses

Diethanolamine is mainly used as a surfactant, corrosion inhibitor and in oil-field chemicals to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from natural gas.
