Isophthalic Acid is an organic compound with the molecular formula C₈H₆O₄. It’s a colourless solid and it’s an isomer of phthalic acid and terephthalic acid.

Production

It is produced by oxidizing meta-xylene using oxygen. The process employs a cobalt-manganese catalyst. Purified Isophthalic acid is a colorless crystalline solid with a purity of >99.8%.

USE

Purified Isophthalic acid (PIA) is mainly used in production of bottle of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), unsaturated polyester resins, alkyds/polyesters, FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics), polyurethane resins (insulation materials).

PIA improves clarity of bottles, improves thermal/mechanical/chemical resistance of unsaturated polyester resins, increase resistance to water, overall durability & weatherability and hardness of Alkyds/Polyesters.
