Production

Benzoic acid is produced industrially by partial oxidation of toluene with oxygen and the process is catalysed by V2O5.

Uses

Benzoic acid is mainly used as a chemical intermediate for synthesis of industrial chemicals such as phenol, caprolactam and glycol benzoates for the application of plasticizer in adhesive formulations. It’s also used in the manufacture of alkyd resins, drilling mud additive for crude oil recovery applications and as a rubber polymerization activator and retardant.

Benzoic acid converted to its salts and esters are used in food preservatives application, drugs, and personal products.
